Every letter, in a sentence that makes sense

Four pangrams load by default: the quick brown fox, pack my box with five dozen liquor jugs, sphinx of black quartz, and how vexingly quick daft zebras jump.

Each prints as a traceable model with a copy row beneath, on four-line ruling.

Why a pangram beats an alphabet row

An alphabet row gives you every letter in isolation. A pangram gives you every letter in context, which is a different and more useful exercise.

Letters behave differently inside words: the joins change, the spacing has to hold, and the writer has to keep size consistent across a whole line rather than resetting between characters. A child with immaculate individual letters can still write an unreadable sentence, and only the sentence reveals it.

It is also a warm-up rather than a lesson. Writing one pangram before a longer piece gets the hand moving through the awkward letters — the q, the x, the z — which otherwise turn up unrehearsed halfway through something that matters.

The four are not equally good

"The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" is the famous one and it is 35 letters long for 26 slots, so several letters repeat.

"Sphinx of black quartz, judge my vow" is 29 letters, which is close to perfect, and consequently much harder to write — there is almost no repetition to settle into, and the awkward combinations come one after another.

Use the fox for a young child. Use the sphinx for anybody who has told you their handwriting is fine.

Watch for the letters that only appear once

That is the diagnostic use of a pangram, and it is the reason to keep the completed sheet.

Every letter appears, so every letter can be inspected. The ones a child avoids in ordinary writing — because they never choose words containing them — are the ones a pangram forces into view. Look at the k, the v, the z and the q specifically.

Choices

The text is editable, so any sentence works. Beyond that: the font, whether letters join, the trace style, rows per sentence, character boxes, ruling colour and line height. A4 or US Letter at 100%.
