What this tool does

This generator prints ready-to-play Three Men's Morris boards — also known as Achi, Tapatan, or Tic-Tac-Toe's strategy cousin. Choose how many boards fit on each page, switch the centre diagonals on or off, and optionally add a short rules block and a strip of cut-out coins so two players can start straight away. Every board comes out of the shared branded PDF template, sized for A4 or US Letter.

What this Three Men's Morris board generator does

Three Men's Morris is one of the oldest known board games — a fast, two-player strategy game played on a 3x3 grid of connected points. Each player has three pieces, and the goal is to slide them into a straight line of three. This generator prints a clean, branded board so you can play with coins, buttons, or the cut-out pieces it includes. There is no setup, no app, and no account: pick your options, download the PDF, and print.

The same board powers several closely related folk games. With the centre diagonals drawn you get the classic Achi and Tapatan board; with diagonals off you get the plain square-and-cross variant. Because it is the identical lattice as noughts-and-crosses, younger children recognise it instantly while still getting a genuine strategy challenge from the sliding phase.

Achi, Tapatan, and Three Men's Morris

These names all describe the same family of games on the same nine-point board. Achi is the Ghanaian name, Tapatan is played in the Philippines, and Three Men's Morris is the European label. The rules differ only slightly from region to region, but every version uses three pieces per player and a placing phase followed by a sliding phase. This tool prints the shared board so any of those variants can be played on it.

Who it is for

Teachers

Print a class set in seconds for indoor break time, a maths logic station, or a lesson on ancient games and strategy. The cut-out pieces mean you do not need to hand out counters, and the printed rules let pairs of children start without your help.

Parents and families

Keep a few boards in the car or a restaurant bag. Three Men's Morris plays in a couple of minutes per game and teaches planning, blocking, and thinking a move ahead — all from a single printed sheet.

Game and history enthusiasts

If you collect traditional and folk games, this gives you a tidy, consistent board for Achi, Tapatan, and the morris family without hand-drawing the lines each time.

What you can customise

  • Boards per page: print one large board, two, or four to a sheet.
  • Diagonal lines: include the two centre diagonals for the classic Achi board, or leave them off for the plain square-and-cross version.
  • Printed rules: add a short how-to-play block beneath the board.
  • Cut-out pieces: add three coins for each of the two players to cut out and play with.
  • Paper size: output is tuned for both A4 and US Letter and adjusts automatically.

How to play Three Men's Morris

  1. Each player takes three pieces. Use coins, buttons, or the cut-outs printed under the board.
  2. Placing phase: players take turns placing one piece on any empty point until all six pieces are on the board.
  3. Sliding phase: players then take turns moving one of their pieces along a marked line to an adjacent empty point.
  4. The first player to line up all three of their pieces in a straight row — horizontal, vertical, or (with diagonals on) diagonal — wins.
  5. Tip: controlling the centre point is powerful because more lines pass through it.

Designed for clean A4 and US Letter printing

The board is drawn vector-crisp so the lines and point markers stay sharp at any print size. The layout engine reads your chosen paper size and scales margins and board placement automatically, so nothing clips or needs manual rescaling. Print straight from your browser or save the PDF for later — both give identical results.

Notes and limitations

  • This tool prints blank boards only; it is not an interactive game and does not track moves or declare a winner.
  • Boards are static, so there is no randomisation, seed, or answer key.
  • Piece colour and board styling follow the shared brand template and cannot be recoloured per sheet.

FAQs

Quick answers

Is Achi the same as Three Men's Morris?

They are part of the same family and use the same nine-point board. Achi (Ghana), Tapatan (Philippines), and Three Men's Morris (Europe) all give each player three pieces and use a placing phase followed by a sliding phase. This tool prints the shared board, so you can play any of them on it.

What is the difference between the diagonal and plain boards?

Turning diagonals on draws the two lines through the centre, giving the classic Achi/Tapatan board where pieces can also win and move diagonally. Turning them off prints the plain square-and-cross board, where only horizontal and vertical lines count.

Do I need separate counters to play?

No. Leave the cut-out pieces option on and the PDF prints three coins for each player beneath the board. Cut them out and you are ready to play, or use coins and buttons if you prefer.

Can I print this on US Letter paper?

Yes. The layout adjusts automatically for both A4 and US Letter, scaling margins and board placement so the board prints cleanly without clipping or manual rescaling.
