Why the egg is the purest of these shapes

The egg outline is a smooth oval: fourteen rows, 162 cells at the mask's native size, four of them full width, and — uniquely among the seasonal shapes — not one concave edge.

That matters more than it sounds. In the tree, the turkey and the heart, the silhouette itself does some of the solver's work: a pinched connector or a cleft tells you where the path has to go. The egg tells you nothing. Every dead end is a decision the carver made, not an accident of the outline, so the maze is as close to a plain rectangular maze as a shaped maze gets.

It is the shape to choose when you want the difficulty to come from the maze rather than from the picture — and the one to avoid if you were hoping the outline would help a struggling five-year-old.

Choosing a scale

The scale control (2 to 6, default 3) multiplies the mask in both directions before the carver runs, so it squares: at scale 2 the egg holds roughly 650 cells, at 3 about 1,460, at 6 over 5,800.

• Scale 2 — broad corridors, solvable by a four- or five-year-old with a crayon. The egg still reads clearly as an egg.
• Scale 3 — the default. Around ten minutes for a seven-year-old.
• Scale 5–6 — fine corridors and a genuinely long solve. Print at A4 or larger and use a sharp pencil; a felt tip will bridge two corridors at this density.

Leave the seed blank for a different maze every time, or type one in to reproduce exactly the same puzzle — useful when you want thirty identical sheets for a class rather than thirty different ones.

Decorating the solved egg

The egg has an advantage the other four shapes do not: once it is solved, it is a blank egg outline with a pattern in it, and decorating eggs is already the activity everyone is doing at Easter.

Print at scale 2 or 3 so the corridors are wide enough to colour inside. Children solve the maze in pencil, then colour the corridors — alternating colours along the solution path produces something worth putting on a wall, and the shape survives being coloured in a way a turkey or a Christmas tree does not.

For a display, print the same seed at scale 3 for everyone so every egg has the same pattern, and let the colour choices be what differs. Thirty identically-mazed eggs coloured thirty ways is a better display than thirty different mazes.

Where an Easter maze fits the week

Schools break up before Easter rather than during it, so the classroom use is the last few days of the spring term — alongside egg decorating, an assembly, and not much timetable left. At home the sheet is wanted over the long weekend itself.

Those two audiences want different scales. A class of thirty at the end of term wants scale 2 or 3, because you have twenty minutes and everyone should finish. A wet Easter Sunday afternoon wants scale 5, because the point is that it takes a while.

Print both before term ends if you are covering both, since the school printer is not available on Good Friday and the one at home will be out of cyan.
