Make a Personalised Name Maze in Seconds

The name maze generator turns any name into a single connected maze that winds through every letter of the word. Type a child's name, a class set of names, or a short word, and the tool carves one continuous path that flows from the first letter to the last — so finishing the maze means tracing the whole name.

The result is a print-ready PDF in A4 or US Letter, with one maze per name and an optional matching solution page. It is the kind of personalised printable that kids love to see with their own name on it.

Because every maze comes from the same branded template, a stack of name mazes for a whole class still looks like one cohesive booklet.

Why a name maze works so well

A plain square maze is just a grid. A name maze adds a personal hook: the solver sees their own name and is instantly motivated to complete it. That little bit of ownership turns a pencil-control exercise into something a child actually wants to finish.

  • name-recognition practice for preschool and reception
  • back-to-school welcome printables with each pupil's name
  • birthday-party favours and place settings
  • quiet-time and travel activities
  • fine-motor and pencil-control practice
  • classroom display boards of finished name mazes
  • homeschool name-writing routines

Type a single name for one page, or a comma-separated list to print a maze for every child at once.

What you can customise

The settings panel stays small on purpose, with just enough control to tailor each pack.

  • Name(s): One name, or several separated by commas for one maze each (up to 8 letters per name)
  • Scale factor: Upscale the letter stencils for denser corridors and a harder maze
  • Include solution: Append a matching solution page for every name
  • Seed: Reproduce a previous layout, or leave blank for a fresh maze each time
  • Paper type: A4 or US Letter PDF output

Notes and limitations

  • Names are limited to about eight letters per maze so cells stay large enough to trace by hand.
  • Letters are joined by a thin bridge corridor on the middle row, which is what makes the whole name solvable as one maze.
  • Higher scale factors look beautiful but produce smaller cells — drop the scale for very young children.
  • Leave the seed blank for a new maze each run; set a fixed seed to reprint the exact same page.
  • Print at 100% scale for crisp letter outlines on both A4 and US Letter.

Who this maze is for

Seeing their own name as a maze is a genuine thrill, and tracing it from start to finish builds early letter familiarity.

Parents

A quick, personal printable for quiet time, car journeys, party bags, and rainy afternoons.

Teachers

Print a name maze for every pupil in one go as a welcome activity, a name-recognition centre, or a display board.

Puzzle-fans

Designers who enjoy shape-bounded mazes get a satisfying word-spanning layout with a single connected solution.

How to use the tool

  1. Type a name into the Name(s) field, or a comma-separated list for several mazes.
  2. Pick a scale factor, starting low for preschool and higher for older solvers.
  3. Turn Include solution on if you want an answer stack.
  4. Choose A4 or US Letter paper.
  5. Click Generate and preview the page.
  6. Download the PDF.

Worked example

Suppose you want a welcome printable for a child called "EMMA". Type EMMA, set the scale to 3, turn solutions on, and choose A4. The generator stitches E, M, M and A into one wide stencil, carves a single maze that runs through all four letters, and adds a matching solution page. Print it, and the child traces a path through their own name in under a minute.

Methodology

Each letter is stored as a small bitmap stencil. The generator places the letters of the name side by side, upscales them by your chosen factor, and links neighbouring letters with a one-cell bridge along the middle row. A recursive-backtracker maze carver then walks only the cells inside that combined stencil, and a breadth-first search computes the single start-to-finish solution path.

Ideas for using name mazes

  • First-day-of-school welcome sheets
  • Birthday-party activity favours
  • Name-writing warm-ups for early years
  • Display boards of completed mazes, one per child
  • Homeschool name-recognition stations

Designed for A4 and US Letter Printing

Every name maze is laid out to fill an A4 or US Letter page cleanly with proper margins. Whether you print at home, at school, or at a local print shop, pick the paper type that matches your printer. Print at 100% scale for the sharpest letter outlines.

FAQs

Quick answers

How does the name shape work?

Each letter is a small bitmap stencil. The generator places the letters side by side, links them with a thin bridge corridor, and carves one maze that walks only inside the combined name outline.

Can I make a maze for several names at once?

Yes — separate names with commas (e.g. "EMMA, LIAM") and the tool prints one maze page per name, which is perfect for a whole class.

Is there a limit on name length?

Names are capped at about eight letters per maze so the cells stay large enough to trace comfortably by hand.

Can I print the solution?

Yes — toggle Include solution to add a matching page per name with the route from start to finish highlighted.
