What is a Frayer model?
The Frayer model is a four-square graphic organiser used to deepen understanding of a single word or concept. The target word sits in a central oval, and four surrounding boxes prompt the learner to explore it from different angles — usually a definition, its characteristics, real examples, and non-examples. By forcing pupils to think about what something is and what it is not, the model builds far richer understanding than a dictionary definition alone.
This generator produces a clean, branded, single-page Frayer model ready to print. Set the word and the quadrant labels yourself, or leave the word blank so pupils fill it in.
The four quadrants
- Definition — the meaning of the word in the pupil's own words.
- Characteristics — key features, properties or facts about it.
- Examples — clear cases that fit the concept.
- Non-examples — cases that look related but do not fit, which sharpens the boundary of the concept.
All four labels are editable, so the same template works for science vocabulary, maths terms, literacy word study, or any subject where a concept needs unpacking.
What you can customise
- Title — name the organiser or the topic.
- Central word — type the target word, or leave it blank for pupils to write.
- Quadrant labels — rename any of the four boxes to suit your lesson.
- Ruled lines — add faint writing lines for neat, structured answers.
- Name & date — add fields for classroom use.
How to use it
- Enter a title and, optionally, the central word.
- Adjust the four quadrant labels if your subject needs different prompts.
- Toggle ruled lines and the Name & Date fields as needed.
- Preview the live PDF, then download or print on A4 or US Letter.
Teaching ideas
Use the Frayer model when introducing a new unit's key vocabulary, as a revision tool before an assessment, or as a partner activity where pupils compare their examples and non-examples. The non-examples box is the most powerful part — discussing why a near miss does not belong often reveals misconceptions and leads to the best classroom conversations.
FAQs
Quick answers
What is a Frayer model used for?
It is a vocabulary and concept graphic organiser. A word sits in the centre and four quadrants prompt pupils to give a definition, list characteristics, and provide examples and non-examples, building deeper understanding than a single definition.
Can I change the four quadrant labels?
Yes. The default labels are Definition, Characteristics, Examples and Non-examples, but you can rename any of the four boxes to match your subject — for example Picture, Synonyms, Sentence and Antonyms.
Do I have to fill in the central word first?
No. Leave the word blank and the oval shows a faint prompt, so pupils can write the target word themselves. Type a word and it is printed in the centre for you.
Can I add writing lines to the boxes?
Yes. Turn on ruled lines and each quadrant gets faint writing guides so answers stay neat. Turn them off for a blank version that suits drawings or mind-mapping.
