Simplifying fractions, writing them in their lowest terms, is essential for comparing, adding, and understanding fractions. This generator builds worksheets of fractions that share a common factor, and the student rewrites each in its simplest form. You set the difficulty by capping the largest denominator, and an answer key is generated automatically.
How simplifying works
To simplify a fraction, divide the numerator and denominator by their highest common factor. For example, 6/8 has an HCF of 2, so it reduces to 3/4. A fraction is in lowest terms when the only number that divides both top and bottom is 1. Spotting the HCF quickly is the key skill this worksheet builds.

Teaching ideas
Encourage pupils to find the HCF in one step rather than dividing by small factors repeatedly. Link to equivalent fractions. Simplifying is the reverse of scaling up. For a challenge, raise the largest denominator so fractions need larger common factors to reduce.
Finding the highest common factor quickly
Simplifying is a factor-finding exercise, so speed comes from recognising factors rather than from any fraction technique.
Three checks handle most school fractions:
- Both even? Divide both by 2, and repeat. This alone simplifies a large share of fractions, just in several steps rather than one.
- Both end in 0 or 5? Divide by 5.
- Digit sums both divisible by 3? Divide by 3. For 27⁄36: 2+7=9 and 3+6=9, so both divide by 3 — and in fact by 9.
Dividing repeatedly by small factors reaches the same answer as spotting the highest common factor immediately. It is slower and much less error-prone, which makes it the better method to teach first.
How to know when you have finished
The commonest mistake is stopping early — taking 12⁄18 to 6⁄9 and calling it done, when 3 still divides both.
The test is simple: can any whole number above 1 divide both parts? If yes, keep going. A fraction is fully simplified when the numerator and denominator share no factor except 1.
Two quick sanity checks children can apply themselves. If both numbers are even, it is not finished. And if the numerator is 1, it definitely is — nothing divides 1 except 1.
Getting into the habit of re-checking the answer is worth more here than getting it in one step, because a partially simplified fraction is marked wrong on most schemes.
Why this matters beyond neatness
Simplifying can look like a presentational rule imposed for its own sake. It is not, for two practical reasons.
Smaller numbers are easier to work with. Adding 3⁄4 and 1⁄8 is straightforward; adding 75⁄100 and 12⁄96 is the same problem made needlessly hard. Simplifying first makes the rest of the arithmetic cheaper.
It is how you recognise equivalence. Two fractions that look unrelated — 14⁄21 and 10⁄15 — are obviously the same once both are reduced to 2⁄3. Without simplifying there is no quick way to see it.
Both reasons also explain why the skill keeps mattering into algebra, where cancelling common factors in an expression is the same operation on different-looking objects.
