What this tool does
Create a printable size-ordering worksheet where children put sets of shapes in order from smallest to largest (or largest to smallest). Each row shows the same shape drawn at several sizes and shuffled into a random order; the child writes 1, 2, 3… in the box under each shape. Pick the shape, the number of shapes per set, how many sets to print, the order direction, and whether to add an answer key. Every sheet is unique — generate a new one with one click.

An early-maths size ordering worksheet
Ordering objects by size is one of the first measurement skills children meet in early years and reception maths. This printable size-ordering worksheet gives them clean sets of graduated shapes — circles, squares, triangles or stars — to compare and rank. Each set is drawn at several different sizes and shuffled into a random left-to-right order, so the child has to look carefully and decide which is smallest and which is largest before writing the numbers in. It is a focused, low-prep activity that builds visual discrimination, comparison vocabulary and number-writing all at once.
Every sheet comes out of the same branded template, so it prints cleanly on A4 or US Letter and matches the rest of your classroom resources.
What you can change
- Shape — circles, squares, triangles, stars, or a mix that changes shape on every row.
- Shapes per set — from 2 up to 6 sizes to order in each row.
- Number of sets — print 1 to 8 rows on a single page.
- Order direction — smallest first or largest first, with the instruction line updating to match.
- Write-in boxes — show a small numbered box under each shape, or leave the shapes plain for older pupils to annotate freely.
- Answer key — add a second page that shows the correct numbering in green.
How ordering by size builds maths skills
Comparing and ordering by size is the gentle on-ramp to measurement. Before children measure with rulers or count units, they learn to judge bigger, smaller, taller and shorter by eye and to put a group of objects in a sensible sequence. Working through several shuffled sets gives plenty of practice using comparison language — "this circle is smaller than that one" — and reinforces the idea that order has a direction. Switching between smallest-first and largest-first also helps children pay attention to the instruction rather than answering on autopilot.
How to use it
- Type a title or keep "Order by Size".
- Choose the shape, the shapes per set and the number of sets.
- Pick smallest-first or largest-first and decide whether to show write-in boxes.
- Toggle the answer key on if you want one, then preview the live PDF.
- Download or print on A4 or US Letter — press Generate New for a fresh shuffle.
Classroom and home ideas
Use the sheet as a warm-up at the start of a measurement unit, as a maths-station task, or as quick morning work. At home it makes an easy, screen-free five minutes for preschoolers and reception-age children. Laminate a copy and let children write the numbers with a dry-wipe pen for endless reuse, or print several with the mixed-shape option so each child gets a slightly different page.
FAQs
Quick answers
What age group is the size ordering worksheet for?
It suits preschool, reception and early primary — roughly ages 3 to 7. Start with two or three shapes per set for the youngest children and increase to five or six as they grow more confident.
Is every sheet different?
Yes. The shapes are shuffled into a new random order each time, so press Generate New for a fresh page. With the mixed-shape option the shape also changes from row to row.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. Turn on the answer-key toggle and the PDF adds a second page showing the correct numbering for every set in green.
What paper sizes are supported?
You can print on A4 or US Letter. The branded template lays the page out cleanly for both.
