Learn all 50 US state capitals

This US states and capitals worksheet covers every one of the 50 states and the city that serves as its capital, from Montgomery, Alabama to Cheyenne, Wyoming. It is built for classroom geography lessons, homeschool social studies, quiz prep and revision at home. Pick a worksheet type, choose how many states to include, and print a clean study sheet that matches the rest of your resources.

Every sheet comes out of the same branded template, so it prints crisply on A4 or US Letter and lines up perfectly whether you hand it out as a do-now, a homework page or an end-of-unit test.

Four worksheet types in one tool

  • Name the capital — each state is printed with a ruled blank line; students write its capital city.
  • Name the state — the capital city is printed and students name the matching state, a tougher reverse challenge.
  • Matching quiz — numbered states on the left and lettered, shuffled capitals on the right; students write the correct letter in each box.
  • Reference list — a printed two-column list pairing every state with its capital, ideal as a study sheet or word bank.

Answer keys and shuffling built in

For the quiz and matching modes you can add a separate answer-key page, so marking takes seconds and students can self-check their revision. Turn on shuffle to pick and reorder the states randomly, then generate again for a brand-new version — perfect for giving each row a different quiz or for repeated practice that never feels memorised.

Differentiate for any grade

Use the slider to set how many states appear, from a short five-state warm-up to the full set of fifty. Younger learners can start with a handful of states and the reference list as a word bank, while older students take on the full fifty with the name-the-state reverse challenge. The matching quiz keeps things lower-pressure with a fixed list of answer choices.

How to use it

  1. Choose a worksheet type — name the capital, name the state, matching, or reference.
  2. Set the number of states and decide whether to shuffle them.
  3. Toggle the answer key on for quiz and matching sheets.
  4. Preview the live PDF, then download or print on A4 or US Letter.

FAQs

Quick answers

Which capitals are included?

All 50 official US state capitals, such as Sacramento for California, Austin for Texas and Albany for New York. The list is the standard set used in school geography curricula.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. For the name-the-capital, name-the-state and matching quiz modes you can switch on a separate answer-key page. The reference list shows every answer by design, so it needs no key.

Can I make a shorter worksheet?

Yes. Use the slider to choose anywhere from 5 to 50 states. Turn on shuffle to pick a random subset, which is handy for short warm-ups or differentiated groups.

What paper sizes are supported?

You can print on A4 or US Letter. The branded template lays out the columns cleanly for both, adding extra pages automatically when needed.
