Create Printable Word Sudoku — Letter Sudoku With the Same Rules, a Fresh Look

Generate free printable Word Sudoku (also called Letter Sudoku or Alphabet Sudoku) — the exact 9x9 logic of classic Sudoku, but the nine symbols are letters rather than numbers. Every row, every column, and every 3x3 box must contain each of the nine chosen letters exactly once, just as a number Sudoku uses 1–9.

Each sheet is generated fresh, so you never run out of puzzles. Download in A4 or US Letter, six puzzles to a page, with an optional solutions page for quick marking. It is ideal for classrooms, spelling clubs, family puzzle nights, and travel.

Why letters instead of numbers?

Word Sudoku keeps every bit of the deduction that makes Sudoku satisfying while removing the arithmetic feel. For learners who find a grid of numbers intimidating, a grid of letters can feel friendlier and more approachable — the logic is identical, but the symbols are familiar from reading and writing.

  • Great for spelling and literacy lessons that still want a logic challenge
  • A fresh twist for seasoned Sudoku solvers who want something new
  • Useful for English-language learners practising letter recognition
  • A calm, screen-free activity for home and travel

Choose your nine letters

Pick the alphabet that suits your class or solver:

  • A–I — the canonical letter-sudoku set, easy to scan and unambiguous.
  • Vowel mix — a vowel-rich set (A E I O U R S T N) so completed grids read a little more like real words.
  • EDUCATION — the nine distinct letters of the word "EDUCATION", a fun theme for the classroom.

Because Word Sudoku is pure logic, the choice of letters does not change the difficulty — only the look of the finished grid.

What you can customise

  • Difficulty: Easy, Medium, Hard, Expert, or a Mixed page
  • Letter set: A–I, a vowel mix, or the letters of EDUCATION
  • Solutions page: add a separate page with every completed grid
  • Unique solutions: verify each puzzle has a single valid answer
  • Paper size: download as A4 or US Letter PDF

How to use the tool

  1. Pick a difficulty.
  2. Choose the nine-letter set you want printed.
  3. Turn the solutions page on or off.
  4. Select A4 or US Letter.
  5. Preview the sheet and download the PDF.

Tips for solving Word Sudoku

  • Treat the letters exactly like numbers — scan each letter in turn across the whole grid.
  • Look for rows, columns, or boxes that already hold seven or eight letters; the missing ones often fall fast.
  • Pencil in candidates lightly when two letters still compete for a cell.
  • Use the printed letter key at the top of each grid so you never forget which nine letters are in play.

Designed for A4 and US Letter printing

The cell sizes, letter sizing, and gutters are tuned so six generous grids print cleanly on either A4 or US Letter. Whether you print a single sheet for the breakfast table or a class set of thirty, the output stays crisp and consistent on any modern printer.

Verify your answers

Every printed sheet carries a QR code that links to an answer check. Scan it to reveal the completed grids for the exact puzzles on your page — no app, no sign-in, and nothing stored on a server. The puzzles are regenerated from the same seed, so the answers always match the sheet in your hand.

FAQs

Quick answers

How is Word Sudoku different from normal Sudoku?

The rules are identical — every row, column, and 3x3 box must contain each of the nine symbols exactly once. The only change is that the symbols are letters instead of the digits 1–9.

Which letters are used?

You choose: A–I, a vowel-rich mix (A E I O U R S T N), or the nine distinct letters of EDUCATION. The chosen set is printed as a key above each grid.

Are answers included?

Yes. Toggle the solutions option to add a separate page of completed grids, or scan the QR code on the sheet to verify answers online.

Is Word Sudoku harder than number Sudoku?

No. Because it is pure logic, swapping numbers for letters does not change the difficulty — only the look of the puzzle. Choose Easy through Expert to set the challenge.
