What this tool does
This generator creates custom time calculation worksheets with four problem types: elapsed time, adding durations, subtracting durations, and reading analog clock faces. Choose between 12-hour (am/pm) or 24-hour notation, set the number of problems, and download a printable PDF with an optional answer key on A4 or US Letter paper.

What you can customise
Every worksheet you generate is tailored to your exact requirements. Pick from these options before you click generate:
- Problem mode — elapsed time ("It is 9:00 am. 45 minutes later, what time is it?"), add duration ("Add 2 hours 15 minutes to 10:30 am"), subtract duration ("Subtract 1 hour 45 minutes from 3:00 pm"), read analog clock faces, or mixed mode (all four types randomly combined).
- 12-hour or 24-hour notation — toggle between 09:45 am and 09:45 formats to match curriculum standards.
- Number of problems — from a quick five-question quiz to a full thirty-problem practice sheet.
- Answer key — print a matching solutions page for self-marking or teacher grading.
- Worksheet title — add a custom heading like "Year 4 Time Challenge" or "Friday Homework".
- Name and date fields — include or omit student-information boxes at the top.
How to use the tool
- Select your problem mode (elapsed time, add, subtract, clock reading, or mixed).
- Choose 12-hour or 24-hour format to match your teaching context.
- Set the number of problems you want on the worksheet.
- Toggle the answer-key option if you need a solutions page.
- Type a custom title if you'd like one, and decide whether to show name/date fields.
- Click generate and download your branded PDF, ready to print on A4 or US Letter paper.
Who these worksheets are for
Teachers
Print differentiated time-calculation practice for Year 3–6 (Key Stage 2) or Grades 2–5. Use elapsed-time problems for morning warm-ups, duration arithmetic for timed drills, and analog-clock reading for assessment stations. The 24-hour toggle supports transport timetables and military-time lessons.
Parents and homeschoolers
Reinforce telling-time skills at home with worksheets that grow with your child. Start with simple elapsed-time questions ("30 minutes after 10:00 am"), then move to multi-hour additions and subtractions. The answer key makes home marking straightforward.
Tutors
Generate fresh problem sets for every session without reusing the same examples. Mixed mode keeps students alert; single-mode worksheets let you focus on one skill until it sticks.
Worked classroom example
A Year 4 teacher preparing a Monday lesson on elapsed time selects "elapsed" mode, 12-hour format, and 12 problems. She types "Time Transitions" as the title and includes name/date fields. After clicking generate, she prints 28 copies on A4 paper and one answer key for herself.
Problem 3 reads: "It is 9:15 am. 2 hours 30 minutes later, what time is it?" Students calculate mentally or sketch a number line, writing "11:45 am" in the answer box. At the end of the lesson, pairs swap sheets and mark each other's work using the teacher's printed key, discussing any disagreements before handing them in.
How the generator works
A seeded random-number generator produces deterministic problem sets so you can reproduce the same worksheet by keeping the same seed (though seed control isn't exposed in the interface yet). For elapsed-time problems, the engine picks a start time between 6:00 and 10:00 and a duration between 30 minutes and 4 hours 30 minutes, then calculates the end time. Duration additions and subtractions use wider ranges (5 to 180 minutes) and mid-day start points to force students to carry hours or cross the noon/midnight boundary. Analog-clock problems render vector clock faces with hour and minute hands positioned at five-minute increments, drawn directly into the PDF with pdf-lib drawing primitives.
Teaching tips for time arithmetic
Start with elapsed time on whole hours ("9:00 to 11:00") before introducing half-hour and fifteen-minute increments. Encourage students to sketch number lines or use blank clock faces as scratch work. When teaching duration subtraction, model counting backwards on a timeline rather than borrowing from hours, which many students find confusing. For 24-hour conversion practice, display a wall chart showing 13:00 = 1:00 pm, 14:00 = 2:00 pm, and so on, and refer to it frequently during the first few worksheets. Mixed-mode sheets are excellent for end-of-unit revision because they force retrieval of multiple strategies in random order.
Designed for A4 and US Letter printing
Every PDF generated by this tool fits both A4 (210 × 297 mm) and US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) paper without clipping. The layout engine calculates margins and font sizes to ensure clock faces and problem text remain legible on either standard. Print directly from your browser or save the file for later; no scaling or "fit to page" options required.
FAQs
Quick answers
Can I mix elapsed time and duration problems on one worksheet?
Yes. Select "mixed" mode and the generator will randomise all four problem types — elapsed time, add duration, subtract duration, and analog clock reading — across the number of questions you specify.
How do I switch between 12-hour and 24-hour time?
Use the 12/24-hour toggle before generating your worksheet. 12-hour mode displays times like 3:45 pm; 24-hour mode shows 15:45. The generator applies your choice to every problem and the answer key.
What does the analog clock mode look like?
The generator draws a circular clock face with hour and minute hands positioned at the correct time. Students write the time shown underneath each clock. Clocks use five-minute intervals for clarity.
Can I print the answer key on a separate page?
Yes. When you tick "Include answer key," the PDF appends a solutions page listing every problem number and its correct answer in the same order as the worksheet.
How many problems fit on one page?
The layout engine fits between 6 and 12 problems per page depending on whether you've enabled analog clock faces (which take more vertical space) and the length of the problem text. If you request more problems than fit on one page, the generator adds extra pages automatically.
Do the problems cross midnight or noon?
Yes, especially in add-duration and subtract-duration modes. For example, "Add 3 hours to 10:30 pm" produces 1:30 am, and "Subtract 2 hours from 1:00 am" gives 11:00 pm. These boundary-crossing problems strengthen mental-arithmetic skills.
Can I customise the worksheet title?
Absolutely. Type any heading you like in the title field — "Week 5 Homework," "Time Quiz A," or your student's name. Leave it blank for a generic "Time Calculations" heading.
