Legs, not a destination
A route on a phone gives you a total. What actually decides whether a day is pleasant or grim is how that total is broken up, and six legs written out with times against them is how you find out you have planned nine hours of driving before you do it.
Booking references on the same page
Overnight stops with the reference beside them means arriving at eleven at night does not involve searching an inbox on one bar of signal.
The checklist is the boring half
Tyres, oil, breakdown cover, documents. It is the part everybody skips and the only part that turns a trip into an ordeal when it is skipped.
Plan the legs, then look at the total
Write the legs first and add the driving times afterwards. Doing it in that order is how you notice that the day you had imagined as a drive with a nice lunch is in fact eight hours behind the wheel.
Add an hour a day that is not driving
Fuel, food, queues and the stop nobody planned. Route times assume none of them. A trip planned to the minute of the satnav estimate arrives late every single day and everybody blames the traffic.
The checklist earns its place once
Tyres, oil, screenwash, breakdown cover, documents. It is eight ticks the night before, and it is the difference between a delay and a weekend.
FAQs
Quick answers
Is the road trip planner free?
Yes. Set the title, download the PDF and print as many copies as you like. No account and no sign-up.
Can I edit the section headings?
The heading at the top and the label in the corner are yours to change. The section headings are fixed, which is what keeps every copy of the sheet laid out the same way.
Will it fit on US Letter as well as A4?
Yes. Sections are measured against the paper you choose, so nothing runs off the bottom of the shorter sheet.
Can I print more than one copy at a time?
Yes — set the page count up to four and the PDF carries that many identical pages.
