What you can do with the Missing Letter Generator

This tool creates fill-in-the-blank spelling worksheets where students write the missing letters to complete each word. You supply a list of words, choose how many letters to hide and which types (vowels, consonants, or random), and generate a branded PDF ready for printing. Each worksheet can include an optional word bank at the bottom and a separate answer key page, making it quick to prepare classroom activities or home practice sheets.

The generator masks letters within words rather than hiding entire words, so students practice letter recognition, phonics, and spelling patterns. A worksheet might show "C_T" for "CAT" or "B__TIFUL" for "BEAUTIFUL", depending on your settings.

What you can customise

• Word list: paste your own words (one per line or comma-separated) or enter phrases that the tool will split into tokens.
• Word count: between 1 and 20 words per worksheet.
• Selection mode: take the first N words from your list or pick randomly.
• Difficulty: Easy (3–6 letters), Medium (5–8 letters), or Hard (7–12 letters) filters words by length.
• Mask mode: hide random letters, vowels only, or consonants only.
• Remove mode: Auto (based on word length and difficulty), or force exactly one, two, or three letters per word.
• Word bank: include the complete word list at the bottom of the page.
• Answer key: add a second page showing all words unmasked.
• Title and instructions: customise the heading and prompt text that appear at the top of the worksheet.

How to use the tool

1. Type or paste your word list into the text box, one word per line or separated by commas.
2. Set the word count (maximum 20) and choose whether to pick the first N words or select randomly.
3. Pick a difficulty level to filter by word length: Easy for shorter words, Hard for longer ones.
4. Select your mask mode—vowels only, consonants only, or random—and choose how many letters to hide per word.
5. Tick the boxes if you want a word bank at the bottom of the page or an answer key on a second page.
6. Click Generate and download your branded PDF, ready to print on A4 or US Letter paper.

Worked classroom example

A Year 2 teacher preparing a phonics lesson on long vowel sounds pastes ten words: TRAIN, BEACH, LIGHT, BOAT, FRUIT, SNAIL, DREAM, FLOAT, CLEAN, NIGHT. She sets word count to 10, selection mode to First, difficulty to Medium, mask mode to Vowels Only, and remove mode to Auto. The generator hides one or two vowels per word, producing a worksheet with entries like "TR__N", "B__CH", "L_GHT", "B__T", "FR__T".

She ticks Include Word Bank so the complete list appears at the bottom, and ticks Include Answer Key for quick marking. After clicking Generate, she downloads a two-page PDF: the first page shows the masked words with the word bank, and the second page shows all answers. How the masking algorithm works

The generator first sanitises your word list by removing punctuation and converting to uppercase, then splits multi-word entries into individual tokens. It filters by the length range for your chosen difficulty, shuffles or slices according to selection mode, and applies the mask. For vowel-only or consonant-only modes, it picks random positions from the eligible character set; for random mode, any letter is fair game. The remove count is calculated as a percentage of word length when set to Auto, or fixed at one, two, or three letters when you specify. At least one letter always remains visible so the word retains structure.

Teaching tips

Start beginners with Easy difficulty, vowels-only masking, and the word bank included so they can match patterns. As confidence grows, switch to consonants-only or random mode and remove the word bank to increase challenge. Use the answer key to model self-checking: students swap worksheets and mark each other's work, then discuss any differences. For differentiation, generate two versions of the same word list—one with Auto remove mode for most students, and one with Remove One for learners who need more scaffolding.
