Build fluency with skip counting
Skip counting, counting in steps of 2, 5, 10, or any number, is the bridge to multiplication, number patterns, and times tables. This generator makes worksheets of counting sequences with some numbers blanked out for the student to fill in. You set the step, how long each sequence is, how many blanks to leave, and whether to count forwards or backwards. An answer key is generated for fast marking.
Why skip counting matters
Counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s lays the groundwork for multiplication: counting in 5s is the five times table in disguise. Backwards skip counting strengthens subtraction and number-line sense. Leaving gaps in the sequence pushes pupils to spot and extend the pattern rather than simply reading numbers aloud.

Teaching ideas
Begin with 2s, 5s, and 10s forwards, then introduce 3s and 4s to prepare for the times tables. Backwards sequences make great subtraction warm-ups. For a challenge, increase the number of blanks so only one or two anchor numbers remain and pupils must reconstruct the whole pattern.
The bridge to times tables
Skip counting is how most children first meet multiplication, before the word is used. Counting 3, 6, 9, 12 is the three times table, arrived at by adding rather than by recall.
That makes it a genuine stage rather than a warm-up. A child who can count in fours has the four times table available, slowly. What remains is converting the sequence into individual facts — being able to answer "what is 4 × 7?" without counting from the start.
The transition is worth doing deliberately. Ask for the sixth number in the sequence rather than reciting to it, then ask what 4 × 6 is, and point out that they have just answered the same question twice. Children frequently do not notice the connection until it is said.
Which sequences, in which order
Some sequences are far easier than others, and teaching them in difficulty order builds confidence rather than testing it.
- Twos, fives and tens — the pattern in the final digit is obvious, and children usually pick these up without instruction.
- Threes and fours — the first sequences with no visual pattern to lean on.
- Sixes, sevens, eights and nines — the hard middle. Nines have a helpful pattern (the digits sum to 9), and sevens have none, which is why sevens are so often the last table learned.
- Elevens and twelves — easier again, and satisfying after the nines.
Starting from a number other than zero is a useful extra step: counting in threes from 7 (7, 10, 13, 16) breaks any reliance on a memorised chant and is much closer to how the skill gets used.
Counting back, and why it is harder
Counting down in steps — 30, 27, 24, 21 — is noticeably harder than counting up, and it is often skipped entirely.
It is worth including for two reasons. It supports division and repeated subtraction, and it exposes whether a child genuinely knows the sequence or has memorised a chant that only runs forwards. Many children who count fluently in sevens cannot count back in sevens at all, which reveals that the facts are not yet secure.
Start from a multiple of the step so the sequence lands cleanly on zero, and keep the runs short. Ten steps backwards is plenty, and reaching zero exactly gives the check built in.

What steps can I count in?
Any whole number from 1 to 100. Common choices are 2s, 3s, 5s, and 10s, but you can set a custom step for more advanced patterns.
Can students count backwards?
Yes. Choose backwards (or mixed) and sequences will descend by the step, which is great practice for subtraction and number-line work.
How many numbers are missing?
You decide. Set the blanks per sequence. Fewer blanks for beginners, more blanks to make pupils reconstruct most of the pattern.
Does it include an answer key?
