Create Printable Prefix and Suffix Worksheets for KS2 Vocabulary
Quickly generate free printable prefix and suffix worksheets that teach children how common affixes change the meaning and word class of root words.
Download A4 or US Letter PDFs for classroom, homework and home learning. Each page opens with a compact reference table of affixes, followed by build-the-word problems where students combine a root with a prefix or suffix. An optional answer key prints on a second page.
This prefix and suffix worksheet generator helps parents, teachers, homeschoolers and tutors build morphology practice into weekly vocabulary work.
Why use this prefix and suffix generator?
This tool produces clear, consistent affix practice for everyday literacy lessons. Learning to break words apart into morphemes dramatically accelerates vocabulary growth, which is why affix work appears across the KS2 English curriculum. Use it for:
- KS2 vocabulary and word-building lessons
- SPaG revision in Year 5 and Year 6
- reading comprehension support — helping learners infer unknown words
- spelling practice where affix patterns matter
- homework sheets and independent work
- tutor sessions focused on vocabulary growth
- homeschool word-study routines
It is especially useful when you want the same root words revisited from both ends of the word.
What you can customise
The generator keeps affix practice focused and flexible:
- Mode: prefix only, suffix only, or a balanced mixed sheet
- Problem count: six to twelve build-the-word problems per page
- Reference table: a small grid of common affixes prints at the top of the page
- Answer key: include a second page with each completed word
- Name and date fields: turn on for classwork and homework
- Paper type: download as A4 or US Letter PDF
- Worksheet title: set your own heading
The reference table keeps independent workers on track without having to memorise every affix in advance.
Notes and limitations
- The engine covers a curated set: un-, re-, pre-, mis-, dis- and sub- as prefixes; -ful, -less, -er, -ness, -ly and -ing as suffixes.
- Spelling changes such as doubling the final consonant before -ing or dropping silent e before -ness are shown in the answer key.
- Some roots work with more than one affix; the answer key shows the canonical answer for the target row.
- Printed output varies slightly by printer and browser margin settings; print at 100% scale.
Who these worksheets are for
Prefix and suffix worksheets suit KS2 learners and the adults supporting them.
Parents
Support weekly spelling and vocabulary work at home with sheets that reinforce the affixes being taught in class.
Teachers
Print consistent morphology practice that slots into English lessons, SPaG starters and homework packs.
Homeschool families
Work systematically through common affixes and how they change the meaning and class of each root word.
Tutors
Boost a learner’s vocabulary quickly by teaching the most productive prefixes and suffixes in English.
Worksheet mode options
Prefix only
Every problem asks the student to add a prefix such as un-, re- or dis- to a root word. Ideal when introducing prefixes for the first time.
Suffix only
Every problem asks the student to add a suffix such as -ful, -less or -ing. Great for word-class work because suffixes often change a word’s class (help → helpful = noun to adjective).
Mixed
The page rotates prefixes and suffixes, mirroring how affixes appear in real reading. Best for Year 5 and Year 6 revision.
How to use the tool
- Pick the mode: prefix, suffix, or both.
- Set the problem count.
- Toggle the answer key on or off.
- Choose whether to show name and date fields.
- Pick A4 or US Letter.
- Click Generate and preview the page.
- Download the PDF.
Worked example
For a Year 4 class learning how un- and -ful change meaning, choose Both mode, ten problems, answer key on. The reference table at the top shows un- (“not”) and -ful (“full of”). Problems might read “un + happy = ____”, “help + ful = ____”, “re + play = ____”. The student writes unhappy, helpful, replay and so on. The answer key on page two confirms each completed word for easy marking.
Methodology
The generator draws from a curated pool of affixes and roots. For each problem it picks a root compatible with the chosen affix and formats the pair as “affix + root = ___”. The reference table at the top of the page lists the affixes that appear in the problems, so learners always have a visible scaffold. Everything is rendered through the shared branded PDF template, so margins, headings and the answer-key page are consistent with other tools on the site.
