Printable ABC and 0-9 flashcards with a big letter or number on the front and an example word on the back.

What this tool does

Print a full set of alphabet and number flashcards for early readers. Each card shows a large letter or number on the front and a simple example word on the back, so children link the symbol to a familiar word. The back page mirrors the front grid for clean double-sided printing — flip on the short edge and every word lands on the reverse of its letter. Edit, add, or remove any pair before you print.

Free Printable Alphabet and Number Flashcards for Early Learning

This generator builds a complete set of printable alphabet and number flashcards with a large letter or number on the front and a friendly example word on the back. The default deck covers A to Z and 0 to 9, ready to download as a print-ready PDF in seconds.

Big, clear glyphs help toddlers and early readers recognise each letter and number at a glance, while the example word on the reverse links the symbol to something they already know — A for Apple, B for Ball, 3 for Three. Choose 4, 6, or 8 cards per page and the engine adds as many pages as your deck needs.

Designed for parents, preschool teachers, kindergarten classrooms, and homeschool families who want a polished alphabet and number set without hand-writing every card.

Why use printable alphabet and number flashcards?

Flashcards are one of the simplest, most effective tools for building letter and number recognition. A reusable printed set means you can:

  • teach the alphabet letter by letter with a matching example word
  • practise counting and number recognition from 0 to 9
  • play matching and memory games with the cards face up
  • build phonics and first-sound awareness (A says "a" for Apple)
  • reprint a fresh deck whenever cards get lost or worn
  • send a take-home set with every child in the class

Because the layout repeats on every page, you can reprint or replace a deck in seconds rather than redrawing cards by hand.

What you can customise

The default deck is ready to print, but every part is editable. You can set:

  • The pairs: keep the full A-Z and 0-9 set, or trim it to just the letters or numbers you are teaching this week
  • The example words: swap "A | Apple" for "A | Ant" or anything that fits your phonics scheme
  • Cards per page: 4, 6, or 8
  • Worksheet title: a heading at the top of the front page
  • Paper size: A4 or US Letter PDF output

The back page is automatically mirrored so the example words line up on the reverse of each letter when you print double-sided.

How to use the tool

  1. Start with the ready-made A-Z and 0-9 deck, or edit the pairs to suit your lesson.
  2. Pick 4, 6, or 8 cards per page (fewer per page means bigger letters).
  3. Choose A4 or US Letter as your paper size.
  4. Click Generate and preview the sample front and back pages.
  5. Download the PDF and print double-sided with short-edge flip.
  6. Cut along the card borders and, if you like, laminate for durability.

Who alphabet and number flashcards are for

Parents

Build a home ABC and counting set you can use at the kitchen table and reprint whenever a card goes missing.

Preschool and kindergarten teachers

Print a class set of letter and number cards for circle time, sound-of-the-week displays, and matching games.

Homeschool families

Keep a permanent alphabet and number deck and adapt the example words as your phonics programme progresses.

Speech and early-years tutors

Use the large single-letter cards to focus on one sound or numeral at a time.

Card content ideas

Letter with example word

Front: a big capital letter. Back: a simple word that starts with it (A | Apple). Best for first letter recognition and phonics.

Number with its name

Front: a numeral 0-9. Back: the written word (5 | Five). Best for early counting and number-word matching.

Uppercase and lowercase

Front: a single letter. Back: the lowercase form (A | a). Best for teaching letter pairs.

Number with quantity

Front: a numeral. Back: a word describing how many (3 | Three apples). Best for linking numbers to amounts.

Methodology

The engine splits your pairs into a grid based on the cards-per-page value. Fronts print left to right, top to bottom; the back page mirrors the grid horizontally so column one on the front matches column one on the back after a short-edge flip. Card borders and a light cut-guide frame each card to help with trimming. Branding, watermark, and footer come from the shared PDF template, so the cards stay consistent with every other PrintablesWorld printable.

Printing tips

  • Use 4 cards per page for the biggest, easiest-to-see letters for toddlers.
  • Print on 160 gsm card or heavier so the cards survive small hands and shuffling.
  • Laminate after cutting for a deck that lasts a whole school year.
  • Print double-sided with "flip on the short edge" so the words land on the reverse of the correct letter.
  • Test alignment with a single page before printing the whole deck.

Designed for A4 and US Letter printing

The same grid prints on A4 and US Letter, and the back-page mirror works on either size. US Letter is fractionally wider than A4, so cards are a touch larger, but the deck count and duplex alignment stay the same.

FAQs

Quick answers

What is on each flashcard?

The front shows a large letter or number; the back shows a simple example word, such as “A | Apple” or “3 | Three”. You can edit any pair before printing.

Can I print just the letters or just the numbers?

Yes. The deck starts with A-Z and 0-9, but you can delete any pairs you don’t need so you print only the letters or numbers you are teaching.

How do I print the backs so they line up with the fronts?

Print double-sided and choose “flip on the short edge” (short-edge binding). The engine already mirrors the back page so each example word lands on the reverse of its letter.

What paper and card should I use?

A4 or US Letter both work. For a deck that survives small hands, print on 160 gsm card or heavier and laminate after cutting.
