What is a codeword puzzle?
A codeword — sometimes called a coded crossword or cipher crossword — is a crossword-style grid in which every letter has been replaced by a number from 1 to 26. The same number always stands for the same letter, so a 7 in one corner of the grid is the same letter as a 7 on the opposite side. There are no clues; instead you are given a handful of starter letters and you crack the rest of the code by spotting which letters must fit to make real, interlocking words. Each puzzle this tool builds places genuine words that cross and share letters, then fills every unused square as a solid dark cell, exactly like the codewords you find in newspapers and puzzle books.
Because there are no written clues, codewords are a wonderfully language-light puzzle: they reward pattern spotting, letter frequency and a bit of vocabulary rather than general knowledge, which makes them friendly for a very wide range of solvers.
How to solve it
Start with the starter letters that are already filled in for you and write them into the matching numbered squares everywhere they appear, using the A–Z code-cracking strip at the foot of the page to record each number as you discover its letter. From there it is detective work: look for short words, common endings such as -ING or -ED, and the letters that crop up most often. A number that appears very frequently is likely to be a common letter like E, A, T or O. Cross-check every guess against the words it would form in both directions — if a choice creates an impossible run of letters, it is wrong. Keep filling the strip until all twenty-six numbers have a letter and the grid spells real words throughout.
What you can customise
- Grid size — from a compact 8×8 up to a roomier 12×12, controlling how many interlocking words appear.
- Starter letters — choose how many letters are revealed at the start, from a tough zero up to a gentle eight, to set the difficulty.
- Answer key — add a fully solved second page that shows every letter and its code.
- Name & date — include header fields when you are printing for a class or club.
- Title and seed — name the sheet and reshuffle for a fresh puzzle whenever you like.
Who codewords are great for
Codewords suit older primary pupils through to adults. In the classroom they reinforce spelling, letter patterns and logical reasoning without needing any prior subject knowledge, so they work well as an early-finisher activity, a cover lesson or a calm settling task. At home they make a quiet screen-free challenge, and they are a popular choice for senior brain-training because the deduction keeps the mind active while the lack of trivia clues keeps them accessible. Print a stack with different seeds and you have a ready supply for a puzzle club, a long journey or a rainy afternoon.

FAQs
Quick answers
What is the difference between a codeword and a crossword?
A crossword gives you written clues to find each answer. A codeword has no clues at all — instead every letter is replaced by a number from 1 to 26, and you crack the code by deducing which letters make real interlocking words, helped by a few starter letters.
How do I make the puzzle easier or harder?
Increase the number of starter letters for an easier puzzle and reduce them for a harder one. A smaller grid is also gentler than a large one. Set starters to zero for a real challenge.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. Switch the answer key on and the PDF adds a second page showing every cell's solution letter together with the full number-to-letter code.
Can I make every puzzle different?
Yes. Each generation uses a fresh random seed, so the words, layout and code change every time. Press Generate New to reshuffle the preview before you download.
