What you can customise

The generator lets you tailor every worksheet to match your lesson plan or home practice needs:

  • Operation: Pick addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, or a mixed set that combines all four.
  • Problem count: Print as few or as many equations as you need on a single sheet.
  • Maximum number: Control difficulty by capping the largest value that appears in any equation. Lower numbers suit early learners; higher values challenge older students.
  • Missing position: The generator randomly hides the first operand, second operand or result, so every problem requires different thinking.
  • Answer key: Optionally include a second page with all solutions printed clearly.
  • Title and name/date fields: Add a custom worksheet title and toggle student name and date boxes on or off.

Who these worksheets are for

Teachers

Print a fresh set for every lesson without hunting through workbook pages. Use mixed-operation mode for quick formative assessment or focus on a single operation to reinforce a new concept. The answer key speeds up marking when you're working with a full class set.

Parents and homeschoolers

Generate practice sheets that match exactly where your child is working. Start with small numbers and addition-only problems, then increase the maximum value or switch to subtraction as confidence grows. The randomised blank position keeps worksheets interesting even when you print several in a row.

Tutors and interventionists

Create targeted drills for students who need extra support with inverse operations or fact fluency. Because you control the difficulty ceiling and operation type, you can scaffold learning without overwhelming learners.

How to use the tool

  1. Select your operation: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division or mixed.
  2. Set the maximum number — this controls how large the values in each equation can be.
  3. Choose how many problems you want on the worksheet.
  4. Decide whether to include an answer key on a second page.
  5. Optionally add a custom title and toggle the name/date header.
  6. Click Generate and download your branded PDF, ready to print on A4 or US Letter paper.

Worked classroom example

A Year 2 teacher wants to check whether her class understands the relationship between addition and subtraction. She selects mixed operation, sets the maximum number to 20, and requests 12 problems. The generator produces equations like:

  • 8 + ___ = 15
  • ___ − 6 = 9
  • 14 + 3 = ___
  • ___ + 7 = 13

Because the blank appears in different positions, students must think flexibly: sometimes they subtract to find the missing addend, sometimes they add to find the total. She prints the worksheet with the answer key, runs off 28 copies, and uses the activity as a ten-minute starter the next morning.

How it works under the hood

The generator picks random numbers within your chosen maximum, applies the selected operation, then randomly hides one of the three positions in the equation. For subtraction it ensures the minuend is larger than the subtrahend so answers stay positive. For multiplication and division it caps operands to roughly the square root of your maximum number (up to 12) to keep products and dividends sensible. Every worksheet uses a deterministic seed, so the same settings always produce the same problems if you need to reprint.

Teaching tips

Start with the result hidden — equations like 5 + 3 = ___ — because most students learn to compute forward first. Once they're confident, switch to hiding an operand so they practice working backwards. Use mixed-operation mode only after students know all four operations separately; mixing too early can confuse rather than challenge. For multiplication and division, keep the maximum number modest (50 or below) unless you're working with older students who know their times tables fluently.

Designed for A4 and US Letter printing

Every PDF scales cleanly to both A4 and US Letter paper. Print directly from your browser or save the file for later. The layout leaves margins wide enough for three-hole punching, and the optional answer key always appears on a separate page so you can hand out problems and solutions independently.

FAQs

Quick answers

Can I choose which position is left blank?

No. The generator randomises whether the first operand, second operand or result is hidden. This variety ensures students practice flexible thinking rather than memorising a single pattern.

What does the 'maximum number' setting control?

It caps the largest value that can appear anywhere in an equation. For addition and subtraction, operands and results stay at or below this number. For multiplication and division, the generator uses smaller operands (typically up to 12) to keep products and quotients reasonable.

How many problems fit on one page?

You choose the problem count in the generator options. The layout adjusts spacing automatically, but very high counts will make the font smaller. Most teachers find 10–20 problems per page strikes a good balance between practice volume and readability.

Will I get negative answers in subtraction problems?

No. The generator always ensures the minuend (first number) is larger than the subtrahend (second number) so all answers are positive whole numbers.

Can I print the same worksheet twice?

Yes. If you leave the seed field unchanged, the generator produces identical problems every time you click Generate with the same settings. To get a fresh set of problems, change the seed to any different value or leave it blank for a random seed.

Does mixed mode include all four operations equally?

The generator picks operations randomly, so the balance will vary from worksheet to worksheet. Over many problems the distribution evens out, but a single 12-problem sheet might include more addition than division by chance.

Can I remove the name and date fields at the top?

Yes. Toggle 'Show name and date fields' off in the generator options. The worksheet will print without those header boxes, giving you slightly more vertical space for problems.
